From past to present: Reading’s Time Capsule opened after 25 years

A time capsule created for the 250th Anniversary of the City of Reading was opened at the Time Capsule event for the 275th Anniversary on Saturday, March 16th. The capsule had been put together for the bicenquiquagenary celebrations in 1998 using a custom-made box from Carpenter Technology.

In January, the 275th Anniversary Committee was informed that the capsule had been at the Pagoda by a member of the Foundation for the Reading Pagoda. They made the decision to open the capsule in celebration of Reading’s 275 Anniversary.

“We were surprised to hear the capsule was at the Pagoda but pleased that the timing of its location being revealed correlated with the 275th Anniversary Time Capsule Event” says Laura Reppert, 275th Anniversary Event Coordinator.

The event was held at the Berks History Center located on Centre Avenue in the city.

In addition to the opening of the time capsule, the items intended for inclusion in the 275th Anniversary capsule were displayed. An original piece of artwork, “This is YOUR Story,” made collaboratively by local artist Mike Miller, photographer John Pankratz, Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center teacher Steve Simons and his students, and community members, was also on display.

Attendees were able to write messages for future Reading citizens to be included in the 275th capsule.
