Police departments across Berks County will conduct increased DUI enforcement through the end of September as part of an effort to identify and remove impaired drivers from area roadways.
The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program announced that increased enforcement operations will begin this weekend, with police conducting roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints throughout the county.
Officials said the enforcement comes as some college students prepare to return to school and may be gathering with friends before leaving the area. Drivers are being urged to make safe transportation arrangements if their plans involve alcohol or other impairing substances.
Berks County police officers participating in the initiative will focus on identifying impaired drivers in an effort to reduce impaired-driving crashes and improve roadway safety.
The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program coordinates, equips and funds municipal police DUI enforcement efforts across 11 Pennsylvania counties.
The sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols are funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
