Berks County residents are being urged to take precautions as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the area on Thursday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Forecasters say heat index values could reach up to 100 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for those spending time outdoors or without access to air conditioning.
According to the advisory, high temperatures combined with humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, children, and those with underlying health conditions.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and avoiding direct sun exposure. Residents are also encouraged to check in on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
If you must be outside, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous activity to the early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for those working outdoors.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Anyone showing signs of overheating should be moved to a cool area, and 911 should be called immediately.
