Hot dog equipment not cleaned properly due to water supply being turned off: Restaurant Inspections, August 23, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On August 14, 2025, Schubert’s Best, located at 5836 Four Point Road, Bethel, was inspected and found with the following violation: Ceiling above 3-bay warewashing sink is not in good repair. Ceiling surface is exposed with insulation falling through the opening.

On August 14, 2025, NitroGrill/PitSide/Maple Grove, located at 30 Stauffer Park Lane, Mohnton, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed deeply scored cutting board on the Bain Marie on the cook line not resurfaced or discarded as required.

On August 14, 2025, Meraki Manor, located at 1405 Old River Road, Birdsboro, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the quat tablets used in the 3-comparment sink at the bar. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. The handwash sink in the bar area does not have single use towels. Corrected.

On August 14, 2025, Good Friend Chinese Restaurant, located at 206 Crossings Boulevard, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed several cans being used as food storage and service containers. Corrected. Multiple foods in the walk-in cooler and refrigerator area stored open with no covering. Corrected. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Food was held at 43°F, in the Bain Marie area, rather than 41°F or below as required.

On August 14, 2025, Dunkin’ Donuts, located at 800 Crossings Boulevard, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed wet wiping clothes stored in sanitizer solution that was extremely dirty and in need of changing. Sanitizer solution was past the time of change listed on the sticker as 7:53am. Corrected. Food dispensing utensil in sugar bin observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected.

On August 14, 2025, Dollar Tree #09013, located at 1040 Berkshire Boulevard, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: Door located in the back storage area of the food facility has a gap at the bottom due to a rusted/deteriorated door frame and does not protect against the entry of pests.

On August 14, 2025, Berks Lanes/All American Sports Pub, located at 3190 Shillington Road, Sinking Spring, was inspected and found with the following violation: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Paper towel dispensers empty at the handwash sinks in the bar area. Corrected.

On August 14, 2025, Arby’s #7601, located at 700 Crossings Boulevard, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: Nozzles on soda dispensing machines, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Observed apparent rodent dropping in an empty storage cabinet in the front area just inside the entry door to kitchen.

On August 15, 2025, Penn Grille, located at 2320 Penn Avenue, West Lawn, was inspected and found with the following violation: Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Corrected immediately by priming the dishwasher.

On August 15, 2025, Candy’s Homemade Ice Cream Mobile, located at 1085 Pottsville Pike, Shoemakersville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Ceiling was observed with peeling paint and needs to be repaired.

On August 15, 2025, APlus Sunoco Market, located at 3123 Pricetown Road, Fleetwood, was inspected and found with the following violation: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Water, as observed at all sinks, is not under pressure during inspection. Water is turned off. Several containers of milk were observed in the dish area clearly curdled and expired and were not thrown away. Corrected. Wall on salesfloor at reach into the walk-in freezer is observed with mold growth. Observed dirt/sticky residue on the floor under the old soda racking unit in the back area. Observed standing dirty water on the floor in the back-room area. Walls in the back storage area across from the mop sink and the 3-compartment sink have a black mold-like residue. Food contact surfaces of the coffee and hot dog equipment are not being properly cleaned and sanitized due to the water supply being turned off. The handwash sinks located in the counter area and restroom do not have water at a temperature of 85 degrees. Water is turned off. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Old unused equipment stored behind the counter and in the back area should be removed from food facility. There are numerous milk crates in the back area filled with outdated beverage products, and several cardboard box bottoms from drinks are wet and laying on the floor. Missing and damaged ceiling tiles in the 3-compartment sink area need to be replaced. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Excessive fruit fly activity noted in the backroom area due to standing water conditions.

On August 16, 2025, NorteSur Mexican Restaurant, located at 2610 Kutztown Road, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Working containers (2), used for storing sanitizer/degreaser, taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected on inspection.

On August 16, 2025, BJ’s Wholesale Club #57, located at 550 Madison Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple fan guards (ceiling) dusty.

On August 19, 2025, Antojito’s Algo Restaurant, located at 154 Walnut Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Raw meat observed thawing in standing water in the kitchen sink, which is not an approved thawing method. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator, is not being date marked. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in refrigerator equipment.

On August 21, 2025, Wendy’s #19306, located at 2717 Meridian Boulevard, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed old liquid spills and other debris on the floor under/behind the drink units near the drive thru window. There is an accumulation of old food debris in the under-counter refrigeration at the sandwich prep area. There is a build-up of grease on the lower wall surfaces in the fryer area. The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate control of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed water leaking onto the floor from the urinal in the men’s restroom. Observed a large amount of standing water on the floor extending from the sink area near the front counter to the ice machine. There is a significant amount of standing water on the floor in front of the sink in the women’s restroom. An open employee’s beverage container was observed in the back food preparation area. Corrected. Broken door hinges observed on the small freezer under the hot-hold unit by the fryers. The condenser unit for the under-counter refrigeration unit at the sandwich prep area is not operating/draining properly as evidenced by a full container of water being used to collect the dripping water. Food facility does not have available quat sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate quat sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Corrected. Observed a significant small flying insect infestation in the drink and drive thru area of the facility. The wall behind the drink units at the drive thru area is damaged in multiple places. This is the same area that also has the noted insect problem. Wall/coving tiles at the back door are damaged/missing. This area is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface, and this situation could create an area for pest harborage. Working container (spray bottle) in the back preparation area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On August 21, 2025, Folino Estate Vineyard & Winery, located at 340 Old Route 22, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Tomato sauce was held at 69 °F, in the cookline area, hot hold unit rather than 135°F or above as required. The hot hold unit ambient temperature was 69 °F, so not working cook removed items from hot hold and manager will call for service. Interior of the ice machine was observed with black organic matter and in need of cleaning. Ceiling tiles in the dish area, cookline, and prep area were observed with an excessive amount of dust build up. This is a repeat violation.

On August 22, 2025, Wendy’s #19304, located at 15 Daves Way, Hamburg, was inspected and found with the following violation: Sprayer nozzle a non-food contact surface is not being cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Observed fryer and grill cooking equipment, in the cookline/fryer area, with encrusted grease and food debris accumulation. Hood vent filters observed with excessive grease and debris build up and are in need of cleaning. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

On August 22, 2025, Sunoco, located at 1223 Pottsville Pike, Shoemakersville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Hot dogs were held at 109 °F, in the hot dog roller area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected. Raw eggs stored above ready to eat foods in reach in of walk-in cooler and a reach in cooler. Corrected. Food facility does not have available quat sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.

On August 22, 2025, Mary Jane’s Kitchen, located at 1816 State Hill Road, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the dishwasher and 3-compartment sink. Working containers (spray bottles) in the kitchen and front areas, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On August 22, 2025, Historic Joanna Furnace, located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed apparent rodent droppings along the walls in the kitchen and storage area. Firm has a pest control service.

On August 22, 2025, Copperz Brewing Co., located at 798 South 4th Street, Hamburg, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed raw hamburgers thawing at room temperature on the counter by the walk-in cooler, this is not an approved thawing method. Corrected. Two working spray bottle containers in the cook area, used for storing chemicals and taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
