Reading to host October 14 session on energy efficiency upgrades

The Green Building Alliance (GBA), in partnership with Schneider Electric and the City of Reading Public Works Department, will host a free public session on Tuesday, October 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Reading City Council Chambers at City Hall, 815 Washington Street, second floor.

The event will provide updates on the City of Reading’s Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, which encompasses a comprehensive suite of energy efficiency upgrades to modernize city infrastructure. Public sector professionals, including representatives of municipalities, school districts, and local authorities, are encouraged to attend. Presentations will cover the foundational goals and structure of the GESA initiative, key tools such as Energy Service Companies, and strategies for project design and implementation.

Organizers also announced that the session will include an overview of the newly launched Reading Municipal Investment Fund program, which was introduced on September 16, 2025.

The GESA project underscores Reading’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. It aligns with the city’s target of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050, a move aimed at reducing the city’s carbon footprint and improving energy resilience for the community. The upgrades are expected to be completed by late 2026.

Resilient Reading, a program of the Green Building Alliance supported by the Met/Ed Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund, is leading the initiative locally. The program offers services such as energy and water use assessments, grant-writing support, coaching for redevelopment projects, and training opportunities. It also hosts educational roundtables on topics including building efficiency, resiliency against extreme weather, and financing for building upgrades.

The Green Building Alliance has been recognized across Pennsylvania for advancing high-performance building practices. The organization manages the Pittsburgh 2030 District, the largest of its kind in North America, and works with schools, nonprofits, businesses, and policymakers to promote sustainable building design and operations.

The October 14 session is free to attend. Registration is available at www.gba.org/events, and questions can be directed to info@gba.org.
