Hamburg Area High School to present “Mary Poppins” Musical this november

Hamburg Area School District and Hamburg Hawks Performing Arts will bring the timeless story of Mary Poppins to the Hamburg Area High School stage later this month. The production, based on the beloved Broadway adaptation, promises a blend of classic charm, musical magic, and heartfelt storytelling for audiences of all ages.

Set in London in 1910, the musical follows the Banks family of 17 Cherry Tree Lane, whose household is anything but orderly. When the mysterious and “practically perfect” Mary Poppins arrives, she guides George, Winifred, and their spirited children, Jane and Michael, through a series of imaginative adventures that underscore the importance of family, love, and laughter.

The show will feature well-known songs including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” alongside new numbers written for the stage version.

Director Nate Rothermel said the cast and crew have invested exceptional effort into bringing the production to life. “Our cast, crew, pit, and creative team have worked incredibly hard to bring this story to life, not just through singing and dancing, but through emotion, connection, and storytelling,” he said. “Mary Poppins is a show that reminds us that relationships matter more than perfection, and we hope our community walks away feeling uplifted and inspired.”

Rothermel described his vision as a “storybook come to life,” noting that even the set design reflects the transformation Mary brings to the Banks household. Students were involved in every aspect of the production, from advanced choreography to working with professional lighting, costuming, and props guidance.

Performances will take place Friday, November 21, and Saturday, November 22, at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, November 23, at 2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Hamburg Area High School auditorium. Reserved-seat tickets are $10 and available online through the Hamburg Hawks Performing Arts website and the Hamburg Area School District website. Tickets will also be sold at the door by cash or check.

Rothermel encouraged the community to attend and support the students’ work. “We hope families, alumni, students, and community members will come out to support our wildly talented students in the cast, crew, and pit, as well as our entire creative team,” he said.
