Food facility inspection indicates evidence of insect/rodent activity: Restaurant Inspections, March 26, 2026

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On 3/19/2026, Pennside Drive-In, located at 916 Carsonia Ave, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food employee observed in preparation area not wearing proper hair restraint. Corrected.

On 3/19/2026, Oley Valley School District (Elementary), located at 3257 Friedensburg Rd, Oley, PA 19547, was inspected and found with the following violation: The large wall-mounted fan in the dish room has an accumulation of dust that could blow off onto food contact surfaces.

On 3/19/2026, Island Pizza, located at 3060 Limekiln Rd, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food was held at 48/49 °F, in the large walk-in cooler, rather than 41°F or below as required. This is due to a partial power outage for this facility. Employees are working to dispose of the out-of-temperature items this afternoon.

On 3/19/2026, Blue Mountain Family Restaurant, located at 24 Roadside Dr, Shartlesville, PA 19554, was inspected and found with the following violation: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked. Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Co-owner is calling ecolab for service. Three bay sink will be used for sanitizing until repairs are made on the dish machine. Shelving below the grill at the cookline a non-food contact surface is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of food debris and grease build up. Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering.

On 3/19/2026, Backwoods Brothers Authentic Texas Cuisine, located at 272 S 4th St, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed shelving equipment and floor, in the walk-in cooler area, with an accumulation of food residue, and debris on non-food contact surfaces. Food facility does not have available chlorine sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate chlorine sanitizer concentration. Floor in the cookline area around the fryer and grill were observed with excessive grease and debris and in need of cleaning.

On 3/20/2026, The Third Rail, located at 404 Main St, Blandon, PA 19510, was inspected and found with the following violation: Non-food contact surface of the spray nozzle in the dish area was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Corrected. Food observed thawing at room temperature in buckets of room temperature water, which is not an approved thawing method. Corrected.

On 3/20/2026, Pollo’s Don Juan 2, located at 1665 State Hill Rd Unit 980, Reading, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: Hood filters have an accumulation of grease/dirt. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of insect/rodent activity. Facility needs to continue regular pest control service. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the back refrigerator, is not being date marked. Corrected. Observed a buildup of dirt and old food debris on the floor under equipment in both the front and back areas. Food facility does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the chlorine-based sanitizer being used at the 3-compartment sink. Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – mop sink in the back area is not being used due to a clog.

On 3/20/2026, Morgantown Diner, located at 101 Moreview Blvd, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods in the back refrigerator area stored open with no covering. Corrected. Several raw animal foods were stored above ready to eat foods in the walk-in cooler. Corrected. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerators, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in ware washing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Observed clean equipment, utensils, linens stored in ware washing area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor. Corrected. Items recleaned. Observed single-use items stored in a manner that does not protect the food contact surfaces for contamination. Corrected. Observed single-service, single-use articles stored in server area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor. Corrected.

On 3/20/2026, Jim Neidermyer Poultry & Deli, located at 740 Noble St, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired 802/05/2023 and is no longer valid.

On 3/20/2026, Crab Crazy, located at 5614 Allentown Pike, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available quat sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate quat sanitizer concentration.

On 3/20/2026, Cheesesteaks & Water Ice, located at 1665 State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: Sanitizer test strips are damaged and need to be replaced. Mops are not being hung to air dry. No mop hanger available.

On 3/21/2026, Arby’s Restaurant, located at 3210 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed gray plastic shelving to be soiled with food residue/debris. Floor in walk-in refrigerator (under shelves) observed with debris. Shelf below slicer in back room observed with food debris.

On 3/23/2026, Jak’s Downtown Diner, located at 9 Centre Ave, Topton, PA 19562, was inspected and found with the following violation: Fryer basket observed with broken wires. Please repair or replace.

On 3/23/2026, Huie’s Gray Fox Inn, located at 2142 S Galen Hall Rd, Reinholds, PA 17569, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired 10/12/2024 and is no longer valid.

On 3/23/2026, Giant Food #6273, located at 600 E Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Bulk donut topping storage containers, in the bakery area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Corrected. Food facility is reusing single use cake containers in the bakery, which is intended to be a single-service or single-use article. A working container of cleaner / sanitizer was stored above or on the same shelf with food, equipment, and/or single service articles in the deli area. Corrected. Observed the shelf in the donut area of the bakery to have an accumulation of old food debris. Corrected. Observed the hand wash sink in the chicken prep area to have missing caulk at the splash guards creating an area that is not easily cleanable. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the deli walk-in, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Observed the drains in the bakery area to have a buildup of apparent mold and debris and in need of cleaning. Observed a build-up of food and trash debris on the floor the grocery walk-in freezer.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Special Occasions by Panevino in Wernersville, Rita’s of Hamburg in Hamburg, Oley Valley School District Middle School in Oley, Oley Valley Community Benefit Association in Oley, Mayfield and Company dba Hazel’s Cafe in Hamburg, Berks CTC–East Campus in Oley, Rosie’s Kitchen in Mohnton, Neversink Gun Club Inc. in Reading, Greenbriar Lounge @ Ledgerock in Mohnton, Fry Daddy’s in Kutztown, Blue Kraken BBQ in Fleetwood, Dunkin’ in Temple), Best Taco Mexican Food in Temple, Wawa #8179 in Robesonia, and Hissho Sushi @ Giant #6273 in Reading.
