22-year-old arrested after alleged 104 mph police chase on Route 222 in Berks County

A 22-year-old Muhlenberg Township man was arrested Sunday evening after allegedly fleeing from Pennsylvania State Police during a high-speed pursuit that began on Route 222 in Bern Township and ended in Muhlenberg Township.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were conducting radar enforcement on U.S. Route 222 North near the Schuylkill River in Bern Township around 7 p.m. on May 4 when they observed two vehicles allegedly racing.

Police said the vehicles, a Ford Explorer and a black 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300, were clocked traveling 104 mph in a posted 55 mph zone.

Troopers said the driver of the Ford Explorer pulled over after emergency lights were activated, but the Mercedes allegedly failed to stop and fled from marked patrol vehicles.

State police said troopers pursued the Mercedes into Muhlenberg Township, where the driver allegedly attempted to evade officers by making various turns and disregarding traffic control devices.

The pursuit ended when the driver stopped in traffic and surrendered without incident, according to police.

Muhlenberg Township Police Department assisted state troopers during the incident.

State police identified the arrestee only as a 22-year-old man from Muhlenberg Township. Charges include fleeing and eluding police.
