Berks County Field of Heroes honors local heroes during Independence Day week

The 2026 Berks County Field of Heroes concluded July 6 after welcoming visitors to Wyomissing Stone House Pond for a weeklong tribute honoring military members, first responders, healthcare workers, educators, community leaders, and other local heroes.

Presented by the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club, the display featured more than 250 dedicated U.S. flags lining the walking trails surrounding the pond from June 29 through July 6. Each flag included a medallion recognizing an individual honored for service, achievement, or noble character.

The event’s Celebration of Heroes ceremony, held July 2, brought together residents, elected officials, veterans, and community leaders for a patriotic program. The ceremony included the Presentation of Colors by the Berks County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Berks County Veterans Affairs Director Will Tobin, and representatives in dress uniform posting all six military service flags.

Musical tributes featured performances of the National Anthem and Taps by the Hero Brass Ensemble, the Brandywine Colonials Fife & Drum Corps, and musket salutes by the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line.

Among those offering remarks during the ceremony were Judy Schwank, Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Berks County Commissioners Christian Leinbach, Michael Rivera and Dante Santoni, Wyomissing Mayor Fred Levering, West Reading Mayor Samantha Kaag, and Rotary District 7430 Governor Jeremiah Sensenig.

The event also recognized the nation’s 250th anniversary with a 1776 Steps Mental Health & Wellness Walk and resource information tables. A flag disposal box was available throughout the event to allow for the proper retirement of worn American flags.

“Reading Hospital is proud to sponsor the Berks County Field of Heroes and honor the military heroes, healthcare providers, emergency responders, and other community members who have had an impact on our lives,” said Dr. Charles F. Barbera, president and CEO of Reading Hospital. “As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, we reflect on the significance of this powerful display and the Independence Day holiday, which remind us of the bravery and courage of those who serve to protect our freedoms.”

James Milham, president of the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club and chair of the 2026 Berks County Field of Heroes, said the event’s primary purpose is to unite the community while honoring local heroes and supporting the club’s charitable work.

“The primary purpose of the Field of Heroes is to bring our community together to honor the heroes in our lives, share what Rotary does and raise funds that the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club uses to make a positive impact on various community service projects and initiatives,” Milham said.

The Rotary club partnered with the Borough of Wyomissing Parks and Recreation Department to host the display as part of the community’s Independence Day celebration.

Organizers said plans are already underway for the 2027 Berks County Field of Heroes, which is expected to return during the week of Independence Day.
