UGI Utilities has begun a natural gas system upgrade project in Lyons Borough that will bring temporary traffic impacts while also creating an opportunity for some homes and businesses to convert to natural gas service.
The project began Monday, July 20, and is part of the utility’s ongoing efforts to improve the safety and reliability of its natural gas system. Installation of the new natural gas main is expected to be completed by mid-August, although the schedule could change depending on weather and working conditions.
The work will affect several roadways in the borough:
- West State Avenue from South Kemp Street to Park Avenue will remain open, but flaggers will direct traffic at the intersection with Park Avenue.
- Park Avenue from West State Avenue to South Main Street will be closed to through traffic, though local traffic will still have access.
- Drivers traveling through the South Main Street and Park Avenue intersection should expect brief delays and possible lane restrictions.
Construction is scheduled to take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
In addition to lane restrictions, motorists should also expect temporary parking restrictions in the work area.
UGI said some customers may experience temporary interruptions to natural gas service during the project. Utility crews will need access to affected properties to inspect and relight natural gas equipment after service is restored.
Customers whose natural gas meters are currently located inside their homes or businesses will likely have those meters relocated to an exterior location as part of the project.
Once the underground work is completed, final paving and restoration of the affected areas will be completed at a later date.
