Berks Book Bonanza raised a record $140,000 during its recent five-day book sale, marking the highest-grossing sale in the nonprofit organization’s history.
Thousands of shoppers attended the sale, with more than 1,800 visitors turning out on Sunday alone to browse the collection of donated books and other materials.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the results of this year’s sale,” said Judy Ellsworth, Berks Book Bonanza vice-president. “We are incredibly grateful to the donors, shoppers, and volunteers who helped make it such a tremendous success. We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the County of Berks for generously providing the space that allows us to collect, organize, and hold such a large-scale event. We could not have achieved this milestone without the support of our community and our generous host.”
Berks Book Bonanza is a volunteer-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Following this year’s sale, the organization plans to distribute $50,000 each to Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and the American Association of University Women Reading Branch.
The proceeds are reinvested in the Berks County community through donations to public library locations and educational scholarships for women. Remaining proceeds from the sale will be reserved for ongoing and future expenses.
Organizers plan to resume collecting donations for the next sale this fall at 400 E. Wyomissing Ave. in Mohnton.
Donations will be accepted Mondays and Tuesdays from Sept. 14 through Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon, except on Monday holidays. Additional donation hours will be offered Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m.
