Reading Hospital Road Run raises estimated $40,000 to support Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit

More than 900 runners, walkers, volunteers, and community supporters gathered at Reading Hospital on October 18 for the 2026 Reading Hospital Road Run. The event raised an estimated $40,000 to support Reading Hospital’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.

A longstanding Berks County tradition, the Reading Hospital Road Run brings together participants of all ages and abilities for a variety of races, walking events, and family-fun activities.

“Just days after breaking ground on the new John and MaryAnne Post Center for Emergency Care, we’re reminded that events like these are only possible because of the incredible generosity of our community,” said Katherine E. Thornton, president of the Reading Hospital Foundation. “We are deeply grateful to every participant, volunteer, sponsor and donor who made this year’s event a success.”

Funds raised through the race will help advance Reading Hospital’s Emergency Department expansion project and strengthen critical care services, ensuring patients and families throughout the region have access to the care they need.

Among the many inspiring stories from race day was local runner Adam Hughes, who celebrated his 50th half marathon at this year’s event. A longtime Reading Hospital Road Run participant, Hughes has completed the race’s half marathon for 10 consecutive years despite numerous injuries and setbacks along the way.

“I look forward to running in this race every year, and as a longtime emergency care physician, I’m especially proud that this year’s Road Run will benefit our Emergency Department,” said Dr. Charles F. Barbera, Reading Hospital president and CEO. “I’m grateful to our team and the community for coming together to support this event and the exceptional care we provide to our patients and their families.”

Reading Hospital Road Run is made possible by the Reading Hospital Foundation.
