Genesius Theatre is reviving its 2016 rockin’ production of American Idiot, Green Day’s explosive Broadway hit called “wonderfully raucous” and “emotionally charged” by the New York Times.
Three nights only – May 21, 22, 23, 2021 in the great outdoors under the Big Top at Willow Glen Park, in Sinking Spring.
American Idiot, was nominated for the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2010 Grammy Award-winner for Best Musical Show Album, the electrifying production features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot” from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album.
American Idiot features the lyrics of Green Day’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. The book is by Armstrong and Tony Award winning, Michael Mayer. (Spring Awakening) and Music and Lyrics by Green Day.
Winner of two Tony Awards, American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in their desperate young lives. Through incredible spectacle, thrilling performances and with the hope embodied by a new generation, American Idiot gave Genesius audiences the time of their lives, night after night, during its run in the winter of 2016, and it should be no different in 2021.
“Since its inception, audiences have been surprised by the emotional journey the show takes them on, told almost exclusively through Green Day’s songs, including many they are already familiar with and love,” said Tom Hulce, producer, of the original Broadway Production.
“This is such a potent time for our country and the search of our characters for what to believe in is gorgeously celebrated through Billie Joe and Green Day’s wonderfully lush score,” he added.
“In 2016, Genesius was the first local theater in Eastern, PA to present this sung-through stage adaption of the punk rock band Green Day’s rock opera,” stated L J Fecho, Artistic Director of Genesius and director of the production.
“It’s amazing to me that the political craziness, the congressional grid-lock and the increased threat of terrorist activity, both foreign and domestic, is even more prevalent today than it was back in 2003/2004 when the album was created and released,” Fecho said.
This musical event is being music directed and conducted by Dave Neel, associate music directed by Kevin Cooper, choreographed by Jericho Joy, set, lights, projections and FX designed by Zack Spadaccia, stage managed by Becka Malanios, and costumes coordinated by Cathy Miller and Dara Himes.
Genesius has assembled a rockin’ regional cast of characters, which includes, Jon Browning as Johnny – the Jesus of Suburbia, Bo Irwin as Will, Daniel Graf as Tunny, Cecilia Cooper as Whatsername, Andrea Keck as Extraordinary Girl, and Dara Himes as Heather. Other cast members include – Lorna Graham as Alysha and James Haggerty as Theo and Favorite Son, Jalil Little as Rock and Roll boyfriend. The show features, Gabrielle Lewis-Stamm, as Johnny’s alter ego – St. Jimmy! American Idiot also features an extremely talented ensemble.
