Sobriety checkpoint in South Heidelberg nets 13 arrests, 42 citations

Berks County Police Departments from the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 4900 block of Penn Avenue in South Heidelberg Township Saturday night, August 20, 2022.

South Heidelberg Township Police Department was assisted by Officers from Exeter, Muhlenberg, Bethel, Amity, Bern Township, Douglas Berks, West Reading, as well as Deputies from the Berks County Sheriff’s office, the Pennsylvania State Police, and volunteers from the Western Berks Fire Department.

A total of 850 vehicles were stopped at the checkpoint between the hours of 9:30pm and 1:30am. Ten drivers were arrested for DUI, five for alcohol and five for Marijuana.

Additionally, three were arrested for possession of drugs. One driver stopped for illegal window tint was observed to have an AR-15 rifle lying on his front passenger seat. The firearm was determined to have just been purchased legally, and after receiving a warning for window tint, that driver was released at the scene.

Forty-two drivers were cited for various vehicle code violations, and another six drivers receiving warnings.

DUI deterrence operations are funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and National Traffic Safety Administration. Travelers are reminded if they suspect a drunk driver to call 911. To report Underage Drinking call 1-888-Under-21.
