York man charged with murder in Wyomissing shopping center shooting

The Wyomissing Police Department has released new details in the fatal shooting that took place Saturday afternoon in the Berkshire Square shopping plaza parking lot.

The Wyomissing Police Department was dispatched to the Berkshire Square parking lot, Saturday March 19, 2022, just before 4pm, for a report of a shooting. Upon the arrival of officers, two crime scenes were identified on the parking lot of the shopping complex, one at the main entrance/exit from/to State Hill Road and another in the parking area for Walmart.

The crime scene closest to Walmart contained numerous spent shell casings as well as damaged vehicles and a woman with head injuries that was being attended to by witnesses of the incident.

The second crime scene contained two vehicles, one had several apparent bullet holes through the driver’s door window and a deceased male. The other vehicle contained the alleged shooter. Police say the shooter was taken into custody by arriving officers as he exited his vehicle.

The shooter has been identified as Nehemias Santiago Montes of York Pennsylvania. The female was found to also be from York, the deceased male from Allentown, 34 year-old Alexi Omar Rodriguez Serra.

Police say the investigation has found the incident to be domestic related, adding that the shooter and female victim were in a long term relationship with each other.

The female victim was taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital and is listed in critical condition from the injuries she sustained to her head.

Police added that a search warrant was executed on the vehicle operated by Santiago Montes, and a firearm was recovered.

Detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Office as well as members of the Berks County Forensic Unit assisted Wyomissing Police Detectives and Forensic Officers with the interviewing of witnesses and the processing of the various crime scenes.

As part of the investigation, Police say several videos have been obtained that captured the incident. The Wyomissing Police is asking that if anyone else has captured video of the event taking place to contact the Department at 610-375-6102.

Several other local police departments initially responded to assist, including Cumru Township, Muhlenberg Township, Pennsylvania State Police, Penn State Berks Police, Shillington Borough, Spring Township and West Reading Borough. The Wyomissing Fire Department and Western Berks Ambulance were also on scene assisting.

Nehemias Santiago Montes has been charged with Murder 1st, Murder 3rd, Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering another Person and Carrying a firearm without a license.
