The Governor Mifflin Middle School chorus received a unique opportunity to rehearse a piece from their repertoire under the baton of the piece’s composer.
On Monday, March 27, the musical group worked with Fleetwood-based composer Carl J. Nygard, Jr. on his original piece, Misty Morning. During this workshop-style rehearsal, members of the chorus were able to work on technique, learn more about the background behind the song, and get feedback on their performance prior to their public performance of the piece on May 9.
The visit also included a small group Q&A session, in which seven lucky students were able to ask Nygard questions about composing, the inspiration behind the song, his own experience performing the piece, and more.
Nygard has composed more than 200 published pieces of choral music during his lifetime, including several internationally recognized works such as Psalm 23. He also has been named an Outstanding Graduate of West Chester University, from which he received a Masters of Music Composition. He has also taught in both public schools and private studios, conducted church choirs, and participated in choral adjudications.
Nygard’s visit was funded by the Governor Mifflin Music Association in honor of Music in Our Schools Month.
