The City of Reading City Council and Muhlenberg Township Commissioners will be holding a joint public meeting to educate the public about the PA DEP order to remove Bernhart’s Dam and to provide the public with the opportunity to comment on that plan.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide an update on the DEP order to remove Bernhart’s Dam or rehabilitate it to current safety standards and to provide opportunity for input from officials and residents

Although the Muhlenberg Commissioners are working jointly with Reading officials to organize this public meeting, the Muhlenberg Commissioners have no role or place in making any decision about the future of this City owned dam and park property. Those decisions rest solely with the City of Reading.

The meeting will include information on the need to remove dams across the Commonwealth, the assessment of the condition of this Dam, information about how the City plans to address the DEP’s order and an update on the future remediation of the park property by Exide.

The Chabad of Berks County and Rabbi Lipsker have graciously opened their facility to allow this meeting to be held in a location proximate to Bernhart’s Park and central for Reading, Muhlenberg and Laureldale residents.

The evening will include a presentation on the requirement to remove dams across the Commonwealth, the City’s Plan to address the DEP’s order for the removal of Bernhart’s Dam, Background and Further Testing and Remediation by Exide at the Park, and a Question/Answer Period for Officials and Residents.
