Tower Health Physician named Chair of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Board

Charles F. Barbera, MD, is First Emergency Medicine Physician to Hold Post

Charles F. Barbera, MD, MBA, MPH, FACEP has been named Chair of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Board of Directors for a one-year term. The appointment is effective January 1, 2022. Dr. Barbera served as Vice Chair of PTSF for the past two years and joined the Board in 2013 after being nominated by the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians.

The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation is the accrediting body for trauma centers throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Foundation was created through the combined efforts of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, along with the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Dr. Barbera said, “It is a privilege to serve as Chair of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Board. During my tenure I am committed to promoting trauma center development, advocating for legislation to improve the trauma system in the state, and working with industry partners to improve trauma care in the areas of EMS, injury prevention, clinical care, and trauma system enhancement.”

Dr. Barbera, from Wyomissing, serves as Vice President, Pre-Hospital and Unscheduled Care at Tower Health. He oversees Pre-Hospital, Emergency, Urgent Care and Telehealth for Tower Health.

Barbera also served as the Vice Chair of the Reading Hospital Board of Trustees and is a member of the Board of Trustees at Alvernia University, Threshold Rehabilitation Services, and The Berks County Aging Advisory Council. He previously served as the president of Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians and The Berks County Medical Society and on the boards of Autism Society of Berks County, American Heart Association, and the Children’s Home of Reading.

Barbera received his Doctor of Medicine from Temple University School of Medicine, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts from LaSalle University, his Master’s in Business Administration from Alvernia University, and his Master’s in Public Health from The George Washington University.
