1-year-old girl killed in Cumru Township house fire

A 1-year-old girl died in an early morning fire Saturday in Cumru Township. According to the Cumru Township Police, the fire began around 4:30am on Saturday May 13th, 2023 at 717 Philadelphia Avenue.

Upon arrival to house, Police Officers from Cumru Township and the Shillington Borough Police Department found the fire had spread to the adjacent homes at 715, 713, and 711 Philadelphia Avenue.

Officers were informed all residents had evacuated their homes, except a 1-year-old girl believed to be trapped on the 3rd floor of one of the involved residences.

Police Officers, Tower Health EMS, and Fire Department personnel attempted to rescue the 1-year-old female, however the fire, heavy smoke and falling debris made access to the 3rd floor impassable.

Once the fire had been extinguished fire investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police, Cumru Township Police Department, and the Cumru Township Fire Department did locate the 1 year old female deceased in her crib on the 3rd floor.

Fire Departments from Cumru Township and the various surrounding municipalities responded to fight the fire.

The investigation to identify the fire’s cause and origin is being conducted jointly by investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police and Cumru Township Police and Fire Departments.

Preliminary investigation of the fire scene is indicating the cause may be electrical. However, the official determination of cause and origin is pending the completion of the investigation.
