An 18-year-old male died Sunday morning after a vehicle was found submerged in the former E. J. Breneman Quarry in Spring Township, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.
Berks County 911 received a call reporting a water emergency in the 1000 block of Yerger Boulevard at 6:44 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. During the incident, authorities confirmed that a vehicle was submerged in the quarry.
A deputy coroner was dispatched to the scene at 9:21 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at 11:38 a.m.
The coroner’s office said the victim has been positively identified but his name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and to allow the family time to grieve.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3, at Reading Hospital.
The Berks County Coroner’s Office and the Spring Township Police Department are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and no additional information is being released at this time.
The coroner’s office thanked the agencies that assisted at the scene, including the Spring Township Police Department, South Heidelberg Township Police Department, Spring Township Fire Department, Western Berks Fire Department, Mount Pleasant Fire Company, Keystone Water Rescue, Brecknock Township Fire Company, Western Berks EMS and Spitler’s Towing.
