‘23: The Aftermath of Gun Violence’ brings art, advocacy, and healing to Alvernia University

A two-day event at Alvernia University aims to confront the toll of gun violence through art, performance, and community dialogue. “23: The Aftermath of Gun Violence” will take place on March 28 and 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Francis Hall, bringing together survivors, artists, and advocates to promote healing and spark change.

The event is led by RIZE Youth Arts Organization, Shaykayarira Delrio-Gonzalez, and JCWK Dance Lab. Organizers describe the initiative as a powerful platform to amplify the voices of those affected by gun violence while offering pathways toward awareness and action.

A centerpiece of the event is the Miller Gallery exhibition, which features memorabilia and artwork exploring the personal and societal impacts of gun violence and mental health. Attendees are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences. The exhibit remains open through the end of March.

The program also includes a performance of “The Grief Project,” a 50-minute immersive piece inspired by Delrio-Gonzalez’s personal experience and those of others who have endured profound loss. Blending contemporary dance, original music, visual art, and storytelling, the performance draws from first-person accounts and research on grief. Music for the project is supported by the Reading Musical Foundation.

Following the performance, a panel discussion will offer space for candid conversations about the effects of gun violence in Reading and beyond.
