ARL faces crisis after rescue of 30+ animals from Womelsdorf property

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) is facing a critical need for support after rescuing more than 30 animals from a residence in Womelsdorf, PA. Following a wellness check conducted by ARL’s Department of Animal Protection, with assistance from the Womelsdorf Police Department and the Codes Office, 22 dogs, 3 cats, 5 snakes, and 2 geckos were removed from the property, which is now condemned.

While the animals are undergoing medical evaluations, all appear to be in relatively good physical condition. However, this large influx of animals comes at a time when the ARL is already operating at full capacity for both cats and dogs. The investigation is still open.

“These situations are extremely taxing on our shelter and significantly disrupt the delicate system of our day-to-day operations,” said ARL CEO Ashley Mikulsky. “There are dozens of cases in our community just like this right now, and our Department of Animal Protection must be ready for anything. Supporting the ARL and our ability to respond to situations like this cannot just be on a case-by-case basis – it is an everyday, year-round need.”

The ARL is urging the community to step up in four ways to help during this critical period:

Foster: The ARL is seeking foster homes for animals in need, though details on their breeds, ages, and temperaments are still limited. Interested individuals can apply at ARL Foster Program, or existing fosters can contact foster@berksarl.org.

Volunteer: The shelter anticipates being overwhelmed with the care demands of these rescued animals, adding pressure to an already short-staffed team. Volunteers are needed for tasks like cleaning, food preparation, and laundry. Those interested can apply at ARL Volunteer Program or email volunteer@berksarl.org if they are already active volunteers.

Adopt: In an effort to reduce the shelter population, adoption fees for all adult dogs and cats are being waived through October 15, thanks to a partnership with the Bissell Pet Foundation. Available animals can be viewed at ARL Adoptable Pets.

Donate: Many of the rescued animals will need immediate medical attention, including vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries, as well as daily care supplies. Donations can be made at ARL Donation Page, or by contacting development@berksarl.org.
