Bomb squad called to Walmart in Tilden Township for suspicious backpack

A suspicious backpack found at the Tilden Township Walmart led to the store being evacuated for a few hours Sunday night before police and the bomb squad determined the package was not hazardous.

Customers were asked to leave the store around 7:30pm and it was reported clear around 8:45pm.

Police were initially called to the store for the report of a suspicious red/pink backpack, said Tilden Township Sergeant Peter Witman.

After making announcements in the store to find the owner, Police evacuated the store and requested the assistance of the City of Reading Bomb Squad and Hamburg Fire Department.

Witman said the bomb squad ultimately determined the suspicious bag was full of trash and disposable items, possibly from a homeless person or trail hiker. He added that the person most likely left it and forgot about it.
