Discount grocer Lidl celebrates grand opening in Sinking Spring

Berks County shoppers lined up bright and early Wednesday morning, ready to enter the new Lidl food market in Sinking Spring.

Opening with a ribbon cutting just before 8am, the General Manager presented the first customer in line, Lindsay Bates of Sinking Spring, with a $100 gift card to the store. The first 100 customers in line also received a custom tote bag and a chance to win a $500 gift card.

The company was founded in 1973, with the first modern Lidl store opening in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The first store employed three people and carried 500 products.

Lindsay Bates of Sinking Spring wins a $100 gift card for being first in line.

Today, Lidl operates more than 11,000 stores in 32 countries, employing 287,000 people globally. In June 2015, the company established a U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, and has 95 stores in nine states across the East Coast.

Lidl is known for fresh produce, meat, baked goods and household products at the low prices.

The Sinking Spring store is located at 3564 Penn Avenue, Reading, PA 19608 and will be initially open from 8am to 9pm daily.
