Local entrepreneur Nick Johnson shares insight on success, mentorship, and growth

In a recent live video interview hosted by Logan Goldenberg, a sophomore at Alvernia University, local entrepreneur Nick Johnson, President & CEO of TEM Care Behavioral Health, shared his journey from corporate leadership to building a successful business focused on supporting adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The interview, part of a collaboration between an Alvernia University Broadcasting Class and Berks Weekly, highlighted Johnson’s career path, business philosophy, and the importance of mentorship.

Nick Johnson, an Albright College and Lincoln University graduate, transitioned to entrepreneurship after spending 19 years in the corporate world, primarily at GPU Energy Inc., where he held roles in Labor Relations and Human Resources. He later worked as a consultant at Progressions Behavioral Health Services, gaining valuable experience that laid the foundation for launching his own business, TEM Care Behavioral Health, in 2014.

During the interview, Johnson explained how he made the transition from a stable corporate job to starting his own business. “I took a leap of faith,” he said. “I didn’t want someone else to shape my career. I wanted to live my dream and my passion.” Despite having two children and a steady job, Johnson decided to venture out on his own, starting with just three employees. Today, TEM Care has grown to employ 70 staff members, serving clients from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.

Johnson’s company offers a range of services, including Behavioral Specialist Support, Community Support, and Counseling. His leadership style emphasizes hard work, adaptability, and a people-first approach. He attributes the success of TEM Care to maintaining a lean operation, investing in frontline staff, and being hands-on in every aspect of the business. “I didn’t receive a paycheck for six months,” he shared, emphasizing his commitment to reinvesting in the company’s growth during its early stages.

Johnson also spoke about the importance of flexibility and technology in today’s business environment, especially in light of changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. He advocates for a blend of in-office and remote work, allowing his staff the autonomy to manage their schedules. “If you don’t use technology the way it is now, then you’re not gonna make it,” he stated, highlighting how TEM Care has adapted to new ways of working.

A recurring theme throughout the conversation was mentorship, something Johnson is deeply passionate about. He attributes much of his success to his mentor, who guided him during a challenging period at GPU Energy. “I’m a big believer in giving back,” he said. “I don’t want you to give me anything; just show me what I have to do.” Johnson’s approach to mentorship focuses on fostering independence, encouraging mentees to come up with solutions rather than just bringing problems to the table.

When asked for advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, Johnson emphasized the need for passion and resilience. “There’s a difference between having a hobby and a business. A hobby can come and go. A business, you gotta get some residual income so you can pay the bills,” he advised.

As TEM Care approaches its 10th anniversary, Johnson reflected on the company’s growth and future. “From three people to 70, we’ve really grown,” he said. Looking ahead, he sees flexibility, technology, and a focus on employee autonomy as key trends that will shape the future of business. Johnson remains committed to leaving “the ladder down” for others, just as his mentor did for him, ensuring that future leaders have the guidance they need to succeed.

Johnson’s story is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the power of mentorship. Growing up in Reading, PA, with limited resources, he built a thriving business from the ground up. “I didn’t have two nickels to rub together, but I worked hard,” he shared. Today, TEM Care’s success reflects Johnson’s dedication not only to his business but also to the broader community.

As he concluded the interview, Johnson encouraged students run the audience and young entrepreneurs watching to remain passionate and committed. “Be passionate, but know the difference between a hobby and a business,” he said. With a focus on resilience, adaptability, and giving back, Nick Johnson continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams and build a brighter future.
