Rotary STEM academy at Kutztown University gives middle school students hands-on learning experience

Sixty-four aspiring eighth-grade students from across southeastern Pennsylvania spent four days exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics during the 2026 Rotary District 7430 STEM Youth Explorers Academy, held July 9-12 at Kutztown University.

The academy brought together students from 28 middle schools in Montgomery, Bucks, Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Scholarships provided by 25 Rotary clubs allowed participants to attend the program, where they took part in hands-on STEM activities while also developing leadership and teamwork skills.

In addition to STEM-focused learning, students received CPR, Stop the Bleed and bicycle safety training through resources provided by Tower Health.

The academy concluded with a celebration dinner where students displayed their Mars Habitat projects for family and friends. The event also included remarks from Dr. Laurie McMillan, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Kutztown University. Students received certificates and class photos from Rotary District 7430 Governor Jeremiah Sensening.

According to Rotary District 7430, the STEM Youth Explorers Academy was created through a districtwide collaboration of Rotary volunteers to provide educational opportunities for students interested in STEM fields. Organizers said the program is designed not only to introduce science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts, but also to help students develop leadership, communication and collaboration skills.

Alex, a student from Kutztown who participated in the academy, said the experience taught valuable teamwork skills.

“I learned how to collaborate and share ideas. If my friends asked me about STEM YEA, I would say ‘YES!!!’”

Gary Englehardt, STEM YEA volunteer coordinator, said the program helps expand opportunities for students who may not otherwise have access to similar experiences.

“Rotary District 7430 is grateful for the Rotarian volunteers who collaborate to make this academy experience for youth who may lack access to such opportunities. Together, we have provided an event helping to shape the future for our youth by providing not only the STEM YEA experience but also a gateway to other Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) programs.”

Organizers said planning is already underway for the 2027 STEM Youth Explorers Academy at Kutztown University.

Rotary District 7430 includes 45 Rotary clubs serving Montgomery, Bucks, Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties. The organization sponsors a variety of youth programs aimed at developing leadership, encouraging service and promoting global citizenship.
