Car crash in Upper Bern Township claims one life, injures another

A crash on Old Route 22 in Upper Bern Township resulted in the death of a 59-year-old woman from Hamburg, PA, Thursday, November 9, 2023, at approximately 11:25pm. A 17-year-old male from Bernville, PA also sustained suspected serious injuries.

According a preliminary investigation conducted by Pennsylvania State Police, the crash involved three vehicles. The sequence of events was outlined as the westbound Unit #1, traveling at a high speed, attempted to overtake the third vehicle (Unit #3) by crossing the solid, double yellow line. Simultaneously, Unit #2 was heading east on the same route and was struck by Unit #1 in the process of overtaking.

Tragically, the collision resulted in the death of the 59-year-old female operator of Unit #2. The 17-year-old male operator of Unit #1 was rushed to Reading Hospital – Tower Health due to suspected serious injuries, while the 49-year-old male operator of Unit #3 declined medical assistance at the scene.

Assisting State Police on-site were multiple local agencies, including the Bernville Community Fire Co., Shartlesville Fire Company, Union Fire Company No. 1 of Hamburg, and Hamburg Ambulance.

The identities of those involved have been withheld pending proper notification of their families.
