The heart of downtown Reading glowed with holiday cheer Tuesday night as residents gathered for the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at the corner of 5th and Penn Streets. The event brought together community members of all ages to usher in the festive season with music, dance, and heartfelt messages of unity and gratitude.
The evening began with a warm opening prayer and message delivered by English Bradley, the mayor’s chief of staff, who encouraged attendees to reflect on the season’s spirit of peace and giving. “This is a time to celebrate our differences and lift one another up,” Bradley shared.
Throughout the event, the stage was alive with performances by the Reading Choral Society, the Reading Recreation Commission, and the Olivet Boys & Girls Club, spreading holiday cheer through music and dance. State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz echoed the spirit of the season, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and kindness. “Light symbolizes hope, love, and kindness. Let’s reflect on what we can do to support our community and neighbors,” she said.
Councilman Chris Miller also took the stage, reflecting on the diversity and togetherness that define Reading. “The holidays remind us to be welcoming and to celebrate our neighbors year-round,” he remarked, before humorously requesting a new train for the city under the tree.
Mayor Eddie Morán delivered a heartfelt address, highlighting the importance of unity and compassion during the holidays. “Let’s not forget the meaning of this season – giving thanks and giving love,” he said. The mayor became visibly emotional as he recalled family traditions and encouraged residents to support one another, especially those in need. He concluded by inviting children to help light the tree, a moment met with cheers and applause from the crowd.
The evening also featured special appearances by Miss Berks County 2024 and Miss Greater Reading 2024, who praised the community’s growth and encouraged continued unity.
The Christmas tree lighting marked the official start of the holiday season in Reading, and attendees enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate, courtesy of local sponsors like the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading and the Salvation Army. The festivities closed with a final performance by the Olivet Boys & Girls Club, leaving the crowd in high spirits.
The event served as a reminder of the joy and togetherness the holiday season brings to the city. As the mayor aptly put it, “Together, we can light up not only this tree but also the lives of those around us.”
