Burglary suspect arrested after shots fired in Reading

A Fleetwood man was arrested following a tense situation involving a burglary and shots fired on Windsor Street in Reading on Thursday morning, according to the Reading Police Department.

The incident occurred on October 24, 2024, at approximately 11:03 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a man attempting to force his way into a residence in the 100 block of Windsor Street. Upon arriving at the scene, officers heard gunshots and observed a man exiting a third-floor apartment window before climbing into a second-floor apartment window within the same building.

The suspect, identified as Ricki-Mateo Lopez-Mercedes, 25, then attempted to barricade himself inside the third-floor apartment. The female resident of that apartment managed to escape the building unharmed, and police swiftly evacuated the remaining residents to ensure their safety.

Officers established communication with Lopez-Mercedes, and after a short period, he exited the building and surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Processing.

Lopez-Mercedes faces multiple charges, including burglary, criminal trespass, robbery, recklessly endangering another person, and discharging a firearm into an occupied structure. He is currently awaiting arraignment.

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the incident, including the female resident’s dog, which was inside the apartment when the shots were fired.

The Reading Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
