Reading police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday evening in the city.
According to the Reading Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 6:57 p.m. on April 6 to the 1000 block of Muhlenberg Street for a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. The victim was transported to Reading Hospital for life-saving treatment but later died from his injuries.
Police said a suspect was located shortly after officers arrived on scene and was taken into custody.
Authorities described the incident as isolated and stated there is no ongoing threat to the community.
According to Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel, the victim has been identified as 36-year-old Elimelec Vazquez, of the 1000 block of Muhlenberg Street, Reading. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Tower Health / Reading Hospital and will be conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Neil Hoffman.

Police noted that, as in all criminal cases, an arrest or charge is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
