Janae Kalia-Henry was reunited with her mother Wednesday night after an hours long, multi-state search for the missing 13-year-old from Reading. Police in New York say she was found walking without shoes on a street in Brooklyn.
The young victim was taken from her home in the Glenside Homes in Northwest Reading around 2 a.m. early Wednesday morning. This information surfaced from the family’s home surveillance system. Reading Police Chief Richard Tornielli says the suspect, later identified as 47-year-old Duane Taylor, entered the home with a sheet covering his face and upper body. Taylor then went up to the second floor and carried the young girl to the trunk of his SUV.
Around 7:45 a.m. on August 31st, the mother called the police after she noticed her daughter was missing and the back door to her home was left open. Tornielli said, “I can say with 100% certainty that the individual we have in custody, Duane Taylor, is the only individual involved in this incident.” Taylor has been identified as the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s mother.
Taylor took the girl back to his residence on the 800 block of Glenmore Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. The NYPD got involved and they located the suspect at his home, but Kalia-Henry wasn’t found at his residence.
After the issued Amber Alert, police were contacted that the victim approached an individual on the 900 block of Liberty Avenue, Brooklyn. Investigators say she had asked for help, informing this person that she had been kidnapped from her home.
“At that time, the individual that was involved in this case was positively identified as the victim,” Tornielli said.
The Police Chief thanked the RPD, NYPD, FBI, and the Pennsylvania State Police for their involvement on bringing Kalia-Henry home. Tornielli added that the investigation is still active and on-going, and that more details will be released at a later time.
Duane Taylor Has been charged with kidnapping of a minor, false imprisonment, concealing the whereabouts of a child, interference with custody of a child, unlawful restraint.
