Man shot by resident arrested for breaking into Southwest Reading home, police say

A shooting on Thursday evening in the 100 block of South 5th Street in Reading resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old male, Timothy Harris, on charges of Criminal Trespass and Assault related offenses, according to the Reading Police Department.

The incident, which occurred around 6:00 PM, prompted a swift response from Reading Police and Fire Department after receiving reports of a burglary with a person possibly shot. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found an individual in a building across the street who had been shot in the leg. They were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to police, further investigation revealed that Harris had attempted to enter one apartment and gained access to another, leading to a confrontation with two residents. In self-defense, one of the occupants shot Harris, injuring him in the leg. Subsequently, Harris fled the scene but was apprehended by Reading Police a short time later.

Harris was treated at Reading Hospital for his injury before being charged by authorities. Despite the shooting, no charges are being filed against the individual who fired the shot, as it was deemed an act of self-defense.

The incident led to a temporary closure of the 100 block of South 5th Street to traffic in both directions to facilitate the investigation.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
