A 23-year-old Schuylkill County man has died following a one-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Bernville Borough that remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
According to a public information release from the Pennsylvania State Police Reading barracks, troopers responded at approximately 1:56 a.m. on May 24 to the area of Bernville Road (Route 183), just north of North 4th Street, for a reported crash with entrapment.
Investigators said a black 2025 Tesla Model 3 was traveling southbound on Route 183 when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck a tree.
State police identified the passenger as Keenan Eli Cryts, 23, of Wayne Township, Schuylkill County. Cryts suffered severe injuries in the crash and was transported to Reading Hospital, where he later died at 11:19 p.m. Sunday, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.
The driver, identified only as a 23-year-old man from Pottsville, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, state police said. The investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities said the driver was believed to have been wearing a seat belt, while Cryts was not restrained at the time of the crash.
Berks County Coroner Matthew Stitzel said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, at Reading Hospital and will be conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Neil Hoffman.
Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by local fire and emergency medical service providers, as well as the Berks County Coroner’s Office and the Berks County District Attorney’s Office.
