A 56-year-old Reading man who was found with stab wounds along River Road last weekend has been identified as a homicide victim, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.
Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel said the Coroner’s Office was notified at 3:07 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, after physicians at Tower Health / Reading Hospital pronounced Leonardo Antonio Mercado Gomez dead at 3:04 p.m.
According to the coroner, Mercado Gomez was discovered by a passerby on River Road in the City of Reading, between the Buttonwood Street Bridge and West Washington Street. He was transported to the hospital by Reading Fire Department EMS.
Family members told authorities that Mercado Gomez had been walking home from work at Sun Rich Foods, located at 425 Gateway Drive in Reading, when he was attacked.
An autopsy was performed Monday, May 11, at the Reading Hospital Morgue by Dr. Neil Hoffman. The cause of death was determined to be multiple stab wounds, and the manner of death was ruled homicide.
The Berks County Coroner’s Office said it was assisted by the Reading Police Department in the investigation.
Reading Police said the case remains an active investigation and that no additional information is being released at this time.
