Reading police issue warning about use of gel blasters in city parks

The Reading Police Department has issued a community alert regarding the increased use of Orbeez-style gel blasters in city parks and other public areas. According to the department, there has been an uptick in incidents involving these devices, some of which have been altered and painted to resemble real firearms.

Officials expressed concern that such realistic-looking devices could lead to dangerous misunderstandings. “We are concerned for the safety of those using these types of guns/gel blasters if they are mistaken for real weapons by law enforcement or the public,” the department stated.

In response, the Reading Police Department said it will be closely monitoring this activity, especially in city parks. “We will continue our efforts to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for our residents and visitors,” the alert read.

Residents are reminded that Orbeez guns and similar devices fall under local ordinances that restrict the use of air rifles and similar items. Specifically, Chapter 219 of the City of Reading Code of Ordinances prohibits the use of air rifles, bows and arrows, and related devices.

Chapter 219, Section 219-104: “No person shall discharge any air rifle, bow and arrow, slingshot or similar device within the City limits, including but not limited to public parks and playgrounds.”
