The Reading Police Department Criminal Investigations Division has released additional information related to the shooting that occurred in the 1200 Block of Marion Street on July 22nd.
According to authorities, officers responded to the 1100 Blk of Marion Street for the report of multiple shots fired by multiple shooters. Officers located a male later identified as Angel Ortega, 18 years old, with a gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk next to a firearm that was found to be stolen out of the Reading Police Department. Ortega was transported to Reading Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
UPDATE: 7/26/21 10am – The Reading Police used the following phrase in their statement: “stolen out of the Reading Police Department”. Several new outlets reported the same phrase, leading to many of our followers contacting us as they believed the firearm was stolen from the department. We have confirmed with Police Monday, the firearm was reported stolen to Police by a citizen, not stolen from Police.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that at least one unidentified male suspect and Ortega fired multiple rounds at each other.
Police say Ortega was struck along with multiple vehicles in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Marion Street during this incident.
The additional suspect(s) have not been identified at this time and the incident is still under investigation.
Ortega has been charged with Receiving Stolen Property (Possession of the Stolen Firearm), Possessing an Instrument of a Crime, and related charges.
