The South Heidelberg Township Police Department conducted more than 27 focused traffic enforcement details during May as part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety across its coverage area.
According to a traffic enforcement summary released by the department, officers targeted locations in South Heidelberg Township, Heidelberg Township, Robesonia Borough, and Wernersville Borough that had generated high volumes of complaints and reports of reckless or aggressive driving.
During the month, officers issued 45 traffic citations and 26 written warnings.
The enforcement efforts varied by municipality. In South Heidelberg Township, officers focused on residential speed monitoring and deterring reckless driving. In Heidelberg Township, enforcement centered on speeding violations and occupant protection, including seat belt compliance. Robesonia Borough details emphasized pedestrian safety and crosswalk compliance, while Wernersville Borough initiatives focused on pedestrian and motorist safety, school bus safety, and the implementation of License Plate Reader (LPR) technology.
Police said the targeted enforcement efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to traffic crashes and fatalities.
The department cited recent statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation showing that traffic fatalities statewide decreased from 1,127 in 2024 to 1,047 in 2025, the lowest total since statewide recordkeeping began in 1928. The 2025 total represents 80 fewer fatalities than the previous year.
According to PennDOT, driver behavior is a factor in approximately 83% of fatal crashes in Pennsylvania. Common contributing factors include impaired driving, distracted driving, and aggressive driving.
Some of the enforcement details conducted by South Heidelberg police were funded through grants provided by the Highway Safety Network and PennDOT. The High-Visibility Traffic Enforcement program is designed to increase police presence on roadways, deter dangerous driving behaviors, and improve overall traffic safety.
Police said the department remains committed to keeping roads safe for motorists, passengers, and pedestrians throughout the communities it serves.
