On April 26, Reading High School was announced as a 2024 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School. This honor acknowledges Reading High School’s commitment to sustainable practices, leadership in facilities, health, and environmental education.
RHS is among 41 schools, 10 school districts, three postsecondary institutions, and one early learning center in the nation selected to receive the 2024 Green Ribbon Schools award. This award highlights the school’s innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact, lower utility costs, promote health and wellness, and deliver effective sustainability education.
“Receiving the Green Ribbon School award reflects Reading High School’s continuous dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said Marietta Crossley, RHS Biology Teacher. “We are honored to be recognized nationally for our efforts in creating a green and healthy school environment.”
RHS has previously earned recognition for its environmentally conscious initiatives, including a Bronze award for the Schoolyard Habitats project (Courtyard Renovation & Outdoor Classroom) and a Silver Award for the “LEAF – Learning About Trees” (Arbor Day and Arboretum Work) initiative, further illustrating the school’s dedication to sustainability and innovation.
“Being named a Green Ribbon School is a tremendous honor for Reading High School and the entire district,” said Dr. Jennifer Murray, RSD Superintendent. “We are excited to leverage this recognition to further enhance our sustainability initiatives, promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious learning environment for our students and community.”
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) program is a federal recognition award that celebrates institutions for their sustainability practices, serving as models for schools nationwide.
The honorees will be formally recognized during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., during the week of July 8.
