Reading School District Board approves agreement with Teamsters Local No. 429

New agreement includes wage increases, healthcare stability, and opportunities for skilled tradespeople as district upgrades facilities.

At its regular meeting on August 28, 2024, the Reading School District Board of Directors approved a new collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local No. 429, which represents the dedicated custodial and maintenance staff in the district.

The contract will run from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2028, and includes key provisions designed to benefit both workers and the district. Highlights of the agreement include annual wage increases, a flat healthcare premium share, and the return of the snow day premium, which compensates workers who report for their shift and assist in snow removal and street clearing.

“We’re pleased with the collaborative process that led to this agreement,” said Jim Geise, Secretary Treasurer for Teamsters Local No. 429. “Both parties worked together to reach a positive outcome that supports the Reading School District’s overall mission as well as the dedicated custodial and maintenance staff in the district.”

“Our agreement with Teamsters not only supports our workers, but also strengthens our commitment to enhancing our facilities,” Dr. Jennifer Murray, RSD Superintendent. “This partnership opens doors for skilled tradespeople to join us in critical roles, from electrical to plumbing, as we continue to modernize and improve the district for the benefit of our students and staff.”

Alongside this agreement, the district is highlighting its paid apprenticeship program, which is actively recruiting individuals for plumbing, and other essential positions. The program offers opportunities for both licensed professionals and apprentices to contribute to facility improvements while advancing their careers. More information will be provided soon, but candidates are encouraged to explore available positions now.

This agreement is an important step as the district moves forward with extensive facility upgrades. By securing a dedicated team of maintenance and facilities professionals, RSD is better positioned to provide safe, well-maintained learning environments for its students.
