Reading Superintendent Dr. Mumin leaving for job as Lower Merion Superintendent

Reading School District Superintendent, Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, announced Thursday he has accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools at Lower Merion School District.

For over 20 years, Dr. Mumin has served in various capacities as a teacher, dean of students, principal and central administrator, and has held the title of Superintendent in Reading since 2014.

In a farewell letter posted to the school districts website, Dr. Mumin says he is thankful for his time in Reading. “I thank you for accepting me into the Red Knight Family with open arms seven years ago. I truly believe Red Knights are the heartbeat of this city, and it has been an honor to serve the students, graduates, staff members and families of the Reading School District. I’m forever humble, thankful and #RSDproud.”

The move is pending formal approval by the Lower Merion Board of School Directors. A special meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 23, with confirmation of the position expected.

Dr. Mumin grew up in Philadelphia’s Logan neighborhood and received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, his Master’s Degree in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State and his Bachelor’s Degree in English from Shippensburg.

He is the author of “Problem Child: Leading Students Living in Poverty Towards Infinite Possibilities of Success,” a book that is part autobiography and part educational blueprint.

“I look forward to joining the team at Lower Merion School District,” Dr. Mumin said in a statement by Lower Merion School District. “This is a vibrant community with outstanding students, families, staff members and residents. I am beyond excited to begin collaborating and building sustainable partnerships that will continue to support Lower Merion students and help them achieve infinite possibilities.”

The Lower Merion Board of School Directors says they engaged in a comprehensive search process and interviewed numerous highly qualified candidates before selecting Dr. Mumin.
