Daniel Boone Homestead to host colonial celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary

A colonial-era celebration is planned this summer at the Daniel Boone Homestead, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a full day of living history programming.

Hosted by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, the “Colonial 250th Anniversary Celebration” will take place Saturday, June 27, from noon to 8 p.m. The event will feature reenactments, demonstrations, and hands-on activities designed to highlight life during the American Revolution.

Visitors can explore a military encampment and meet historical interpreters, including a portrayal of General George Washington, while learning about life on and off the battlefield. The afternoon will include a performance by the Brandywine Colonials Fife and Drum Corps, followed by a reading of the Declaration of Independence and an evening concert on the lawn by the Haycreek Valley Goldband.

Throughout the historic site, attendees will be able to tour the Boone House and observe demonstrations of colonial trades such as blacksmithing, gunsmithing, and leatherworking. Additional exhibits will highlight the role of Indigenous people during the Revolutionary War and feature a recreated medical hospital with period instruments and information on 18th-century medical practices.

At the nearby Bertolet Log House, interpreters will present on colonial militia and dragoons, with opportunities for visitors to participate in muster-style activities using wooden replica equipment.

The event will also include hands-on experiences for children and families, including quill pen writing, colonial toys, and games. Organizers noted that one of the highlights will be the display of a Revolutionary War-era cannon from Warwick Furnace, discovered in 2022 after being buried for more than two centuries.

Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors ages 65 and older, and $5 for youth ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and under, along with members of the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, will be admitted free. Pets are not permitted, with the exception of service animals, and smoking is prohibited on site.

The event is supported by America250PA-Berks County, The Highlands of Wyomissing, and Longview Financial Consulting.

The Daniel Boone Homestead, located along Route 422 near Baumstown, is the birthplace of frontiersman Daniel Boone and spans more than 500 acres. The property is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and operated by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.
