Genesius Theatre brings ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ to life

Genesius Theatre is set to captivate audiences with its upcoming production of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” running from August 9 to 18. This critically acclaimed show tells the inspiring story of Carole King, one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century, known for her groundbreaking 1972 album “Tapestry” and a career that has shaped the sound of American pop music.

Directed by Lawrence Fecho, the theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, the musical delves into King’s early life, her partnership with songwriting collaborator and ex-husband Gerry Goffin, and her rise to stardom. Featuring iconic songs like “You’ve Got a Friend,” “So Far Away,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” the production offers a nostalgic journey through King’s impressive catalog of hits, while also providing a poignant look at her personal struggles and triumphs.

“Ms. King’s impact on the music industry is monumental,” said Fecho. “Even today, her work continues to shape the music we listen to.” Fecho emphasized that while the show highlights King’s music, it’s also a story of resilience and reinvention, a narrative that resonates beyond the world of music.

Stepping into the shoes of Carole King is Emily Rhinehart, a local performer known for her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. Rhinehart, who describes the role as both “daunting” and “honored,” has been meticulously preparing for the role by immersing herself in King’s world. In a bold move, Rhinehart will be playing the piano live on stage, adding an extra layer of authenticity to her portrayal.

“When auditions were announced, a good friend of mine suggested it would be extra impressive if I actually played the piano like Carole. So, even though I haven’t taken a piano lesson since I was 11, I bought a keyboard off of Facebook Marketplace and have been practicing since last year,” Rhinehart shared.

The production also features Lady Strongman as Gerry Goffin, Veronica Smith and James Haggerty as songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and a talented ensemble that brings the vibrant music of the era to life.

Genesius Theatre’s production promises to be a Broadway-caliber experience in an intimate setting, showcasing the best of local talent. “Genesius is the best of Broadway in a larger-than-life intimate setting,” said Fecho, expressing pride in the theatre’s ability to deliver high-quality productions season after season.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” is a must-see event for music lovers and theatre enthusiasts alike. Tickets range from $18 to $37.50, and the show runs for approximately two hours and 20 minutes, including one intermission. With a strong cast, a powerful story, and timeless music, this production is set to be a highlight of the summer theatre season in Reading.
