Genesius Theatre to kick off 2024 season with Jonathan Larson’s ‘tick, tick … BOOM!’

Genesius Theatre is set to launch its much-anticipated 2024 Season with the exhilarating rock musical “tick, tick … BOOM!” by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning composer of the iconic “Rent.” Running from February 9 through 18, this semi-autobiographical production offers audiences a glimpse into Larson’s journey and the birth of his Broadway dreams.

Featuring an electrifying score, including memorable tunes such as “30/90,” “Comet to Your Senses,” “No More,” and the Sondheim-inspired “Sunday,” the musical originally took shape as a solo rock-monologue by Larson in 1990. Following his untimely death in 1996, the production underwent a transformation by playwright David Auburn, premiering Off-Broadway in 2001 and gaining renewed popularity after the 2021 Netflix adaptation.

“I’m extremely excited to be working with this awesome team of artists on a production that is about the joyous, messy, complex and very detailed work of creation,” said Genesius Artistic Director L J Fecho. “At the heart of this playful, rock-filled musical begs the question of how we create a path for ourselves, have a regular life, and still somehow move the world around us.”

With a seasoned cast including Genesius veterans Daniel Graf, Cecilia Cooper, and Corey Clark, alongside newcomer Alessandra Fanelli, “tick, tick … BOOM!” promises an intimate exploration of Larson’s life and creative process.

Adding a touch of youth to the creative team, 17-year-old Ellen Rochlin, a longstanding Genesius performer and high school senior, takes on the role of choreographer. Rochlin’s involvement reflects Genesius’ commitment to nurturing young talents in the community.
