Live theatre returns to Reading High School with ‘In the Heights’

Reading High School students are thrilled to perform in front of a live audience again after recording a virtual show last year due to the pandemic, school show director Joseph Smith said.

“We are so glad to be back on stage singing, dancing, telling stories, and forming a community,” said Smith, who is also a music teacher at RHS. “There is so much in this story that our cast and crew can connect with. It’s real life issues that are affecting us right now.”

RHS students will perform “In the Heights” during three shows on March 25 and March 26.

“In the Heights” tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.

It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams, and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

This year’s show leads include Jared Almonte, Elena Crespo, Eric Acosta, Deilenys Melendez, Ian Negron, Celeste Vega Richardson, Jasmine Kabia, Jacob Levy, Jocelyn Valentine, Adrianne Tavarez, Angel J. Alvarado Jr., Mardoche Jules, Alejandro Martinez and Shianti Bruton-Ortiz.
