The Exeter Township Fire Department (ETFD) brought smiles and holiday cheer to local families during its annual “Shop with a Firefighter” event Thursday night at Boscov’s East on Perkiomen Ave. The festive tradition paired firefighters with local children, offering the kids a chance to pick out holiday gifts for their loved ones while making lasting memories.
The evening began with the excitement of children arriving at Boscov’s aboard the department’s fire apparatus, a thrilling start to their shopping adventure. Each child was given a $100 gift card to shop, funded by community donations and a generous matching contribution from Boscov’s.
The store buzzed with activity as firefighters helped their young shoppers select the perfect gifts. Many children focused on picking out items for the whole family, some focused on gifts for individual family members.
After their shopping spree, the children were treated to a magical moment: a visit with Santa Claus himself. Laughter and Christmas wishes filled the air as Santa took time to meet each child, making the evening even more special.
“This event takes us three months to plan,” said Gerri Lea Witzel, ETFD Fire Police, Water Rescue, and Treasurer. “It’s important to us because the kids actually get the chance to shop for their families. Not a lot of kids have that opportunity during the holidays.”
Witzel emphasized how impactful the event is for families who are often stretched too thin financially to fully enjoy the holiday season. “The families are so tight on a budget that they don’t actually get to enjoy the holidays. For us, this is a good chance for us to give back to the community.”
The annual tradition highlights the ETFD’s commitment to its community, bringing joy to children and families while fostering a sense of connection. It’s an evening that will undoubtedly be cherished by all who attended.
