The fire was reported at 5:16 p.m. on May 3 in the 200 block of South 9th Street. Multiple 911 callers reported a house on fire. Fire crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from the rear and roof of a three-story, middle-of-the-row building.
The structure’s first floor housed a business, with residential units above. A second alarm was dispatched for additional manpower. Due to deteriorating conditions, firefighters were instructed to avoid Baker’s Alley. Soon after, the second-story wall collapsed inward.

One resident was taken to the hospital with injuries. A firefighter was also transported for treatment of minor burns.

The fire spread to an adjacent building, displacing four additional people, bringing the total number of displaced residents to eight.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
