Fire displaces eight, sends two to hospital following South 9th Street blaze

A fire Saturday evening in a mixed-use building on South 9th Street displaced eight people and sent two individuals to the hospital, including a firefighter.

The fire was reported at 5:16 p.m. on May 3 in the 200 block of South 9th Street. Multiple 911 callers reported a house on fire. Fire crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from the rear and roof of a three-story, middle-of-the-row building.

The structure’s first floor housed a business, with residential units above. A second alarm was dispatched for additional manpower. Due to deteriorating conditions, firefighters were instructed to avoid Baker’s Alley. Soon after, the second-story wall collapsed inward.

One resident was taken to the hospital with injuries. A firefighter was also transported for treatment of minor burns.

The fire spread to an adjacent building, displacing four additional people, bringing the total number of displaced residents to eight.
