Buildup of old food residue and debris under chip display shelf: Restaurant Inspections, April 17, 2026

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On 4/9/2026, Vesuvio, located at 8495 Lancaster Ave, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violation: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked.

On 4/9/2026, Subway/Auntie Anne’s, located at 1800 Tilden Ridge Dr, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: Two spray bottles in the dish area one with blue liquid one with pink liquid both were labeled as oven cleaner. Corrected. Observed an employee visor on the food contact surface of a silicone baking mat in the prep area. Please ensure employees are not laying personal items on any food contact/prep areas of the facility. Corrected.

On 4/9/2026, Speedway #06731, located at 2336 Lancaster Pike, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a buildup of old food residue and debris under the chip display shelf by the milk. Observed 3 gallons of milk available for sale past the sell by date of 4/8/26. Corrected. Observed single use containers not stored inverted to prevent contamination. Corrected. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Corrected.

On 4/9/2026, Lincoln Park Fire Company, located at 310 Old Fritztown Rd, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods were held at 46°F, in the server refrigerator, rather than 41°F or below as required. Corrected. Observed a buildup of apparent slime on the nonfood contact portion of the ice machine. Food facility is not removing dead or trapped pests from control devices frequently, as evidenced by observed old / decaying the front kitchen area in pest control device in the soda syrup area. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in dry storage area, stored uncovered or not inverted.

On 4/9/2026, Hartranft Poultry & Seafood, located at 10 S Summit Ave, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food Employee observed changing tasks that may have contaminated hands without a proper handwash in-between. Food Employee observed donning single use gloves without a prior hand wash. Observed wet wiping cloths in the prep area, not being stored in sanitizer solution. The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Food Employee is not using available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine sanitizer concentration. The handwash sink in the prep area being used as a food preparation sink as evidenced by observed equipment food in the sink. Corrected. Multiple foods were held at 48°F, in the front display case area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Multiple foods in the refrigerator area stored open with no covering. Raw fish was stored above raw chicken in the refrigerator. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of insect activity in equipment areas, facility does have a pest control program. No live activity observed. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the cold hold displays, is not being date marked. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the prep area, stored uncovered or not inverted. Observed clean equipment, stored in sink area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor.

On 4/9/2026, Deluxe Restaurant, located at 2295 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food employee observed in cook area, wearing bracelet and watch on hands or arms. Corrected. Multiple condiments were held at 46°F, in the Bian Marie in kitchen area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Fan cover on the dessert case observed to have a dust build up. Corrected. Food employees observed in the cook area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Corrected. Areas of the floor in the kitchen area is made of tile and is cracked and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface.

On 4/9/2026, Christine’s Creekside Inn, located at 1250 Greenhills Rd, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violation: There is an accumulation of grease/debris on the floor between pieces of equipment at the left end of the cooking line

On 4/9/2026, Carmelo’s Pizza, located at 116 E Philadelphia Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violation: Tomato sauce, which was cooled, was only reheated to 104°F for hot holding and not 165°F for 15 seconds as required. Wall underneath the handwash sink in the kitchen area, has a hole near the floor, and in need of repair. Observed ventilation hood, in the cookline area, with encrusted grease accumulation.

On 4/9/2026, 3rd Street Cafe, located at 29 S 3rd St, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed wet wiping cloths in bar and cookline area, not being stored in sanitizer solution. Observed shelving below the grill and the side of the fryer equipment, in the cookline area, with an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired 3/11/2025 and is no longer valid.

On 4/10/2026, Vinny G’s, located at 18 A State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.

On 4/11/2026, Wal-Mart Store #2614, located at 5370 Allentown Pike, Temple, PA 19560, was inspected and found with the following violation: Two handwashing sinks observed to have cleaning bottles, containers, and non-handwashing supplies in the sink basin. Corrected on inspection. A working container of *cleaner / sanitizer* was stored above or on the same shelf with food, equipment, and/or single service articles in the deli/bakery area. Corrected on inspection.

On 4/16/2026, Leyenda 2, located at 600 Tulpehocken St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violation: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator, is not being date marked.

On 4/16/2026, Elian Mini Market, located at 951 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violation: Facility was listed as out of compliance. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in refrigerated equipment. Live cat observed on the premise of the food facility roaming throughout the store. Empanadas was held at 122.1 °F, in the hot display area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Raw chicken was stored above raw beef, pork in the refrigerator. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Food facility hot water heater is not producing enough hot water to supply 3 basin sinks at the time of this inspection. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the restroom area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the restroom area.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Weis Market #184 in Oley, Waterman Meat Market in Hereford, The Country Market Deli in Reading, Pleasantville Diner in Oley, Boyertown Area Schools Earl Elementary in Boyertown, Wendy’s #19306 in Wyomissing, Wawa #8119 in Leesport, Twisted Spuds in Wernersville, Shartlesville Dollar General #19767 in Shartlesville, Ruscombmanor Volunteer Fire Company in Fleetwood, Plain ‘N Fancy Donuts in Kutztown, Love’s Travel Stop & Subway #358 in Hamburg, Kona Ice of Central Berks County in Reading, Kona Ice of Central Berks County in Reading, Galen Hall in Wernersville, Dollar General Store #25686 in Mohrsville, Burger King #0282 in Reading, Sam’s Club #8160 in Temple, Panda Express #3443 in Reading, and Trinity U.C.C. in Rehrersburg.
