Following the attempted assassination of former President Trump Saturday evening in Butler, PA, several local elected officials in Berks County released statements condemning the violence and urging unity.

“We are grateful that President Trump’s injuries appear to be minor and commend the men and women of the Secret Service for their quick response. Let us remain composed as a society and stand united in support of federal law enforcement officials as they conduct a thorough investigation.”

“As Berks Countians and as Americans, we believe in the political process. We, as a country, do not need to hold the same beliefs save one – we all must believe that our pluralistic society can faithfully coexist. We hope, as President Lincoln once did, that the nation will appeal to the better angels of our nature during this challenging time.”

Statement from Reading Mayor Eddie Morán: “Yesterday, we witnessed a tragic incident involving former President Donald Trump. Let’s come together to pray for the safety and healing of our Nation, Pennsylvania, and the great City of Reading. As your Mayor, I want to reaffirm that there is no place for violence in our City or Commonwealth. Our differences, no matter how significant, must be resolved peacefully.”

Statement from Pennsylvania State Senator Judy Schwank: “Yesterday’s attack on former president Trump is shocking, unsettling and must be condemned. Politically motivated violence weakens our democracy and makes us all less safe. In this country, we resolve our differences at the ballot box. I’m thankful he is not seriously injured, and I applaud the first responders for acting quickly to remove him from harm’s way.”
