Mohnton bicyclist killed in Spring Township crash identified

A 78-year-old Mohnton man has died after his bicycle was struck by an SUV Friday afternoon in Spring Township, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

Berks County Coroner Matthew J. Stitzel said the Coroner’s Office was notified of the death at 3:06 p.m. Friday, June 26, by the Emergency Department at Reading Hospital. A deputy coroner responded to the hospital to investigate.

According to the investigation, John Barton Renninger, of the 0 block of East Summit Street in Mohnton Borough, was riding his bicycle eastbound on Revere Boulevard (Route 724) shortly before 2:30 p.m. when a westbound SUV attempted to make a left turn onto Cloister Court and struck him.

The coroner said Renninger was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but suffered fatal injuries.

His cause of death will be certified as blunt force trauma, and the manner of death has been ruled accidental.

The Spring Township Police Department assisted the Coroner’s Office with the investigation.
