Muhlenberg Township man dies following motorcycle crash in Perry Township

A 70-year-old Muhlenberg Township man died after a motorcycle crash Thursday afternoon in Perry Township, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

Berks County 911 received a report of the crash at approximately 12:39 p.m. on June 25. The crash occurred on Route 61 (South Pottsville Pike), just south of Route 662.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was traveling northbound on Route 61 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the motorcycle left the roadway and struck an embankment.

The rider was transported by ambulance to the Emergency Department at Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by hospital physicians at 3:02 p.m.

The Berks County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Patrick Michael Powers, 70, of the 2700 block of Kutztown Road in Muhlenberg Township.

The coroner determined Powers died from blunt force trauma, and ruled the manner of death accidental.

The investigation is being conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police Hamburg Station with assistance from the Berks County Coroner’s Office. Shoemakersville Fire Company, Northern Berks EMS and Muhlenberg Area Ambulance also responded to the incident.
